Quality Maturity Matrix

Also called: QA maturity model, test maturity model, quality maturity assessment

A Quality Maturity Matrix is a small grid that shows where a team’s quality practice is fragile, workable or dependable, so leadership can decide where to invest.

A Quality Maturity Matrix rates a handful of dimensions, such as requirements clarity, defect hygiene, release evidence, environment stability and stakeholder alignment, against three levels. Each cell describes observable behaviour and not a score.

Most maturity models end up as posters. A matrix earns attention when each cell points at a decision: where the product is fragile for users and what it would cost to fix that before the next release.

I introduced one as Test Practice Manager on a global programme. It was written with Engineering and Product, one row at a time, and it was refreshed each quarter from evidence. Teams used it in planning to ask for time, pointing at a cell instead of at each other.
