Wearable testing
Also called: smartwatch testing, companion app testing
Wearable testing verifies journeys that cross a phone app, a watch or band and the connection between them, including pairing, permissions and background sync.
A wearable journey is a chain: the phone app, the pairing, behaviour on the wrist, background sync and what the user sees when one link fails without an error. A flow can look fine in a simulator and fail when Bluetooth drops or a permission is withdrawn.
There are three versions in play: the phone app, the watch app and the device firmware, each updated on its own timetable. Coverage has to be stated per combination, including the oldest firmware the product claims to support.
My most recent mobile work paired native iOS and Android apps with Garmin and Apple Watch devices, tested on physical hardware as well as on a device farm.
